Case Study
Never Forget District Six | District Six Museum
The background
Under Apartheid South Africa, more than 60 000 people were forcibly removed from Cape Town's District Six to barren outlying areas. Their homes, flattened by bulldozers. Today, more than 30 years after the regime was abolished, much of the land remains vacant. It's history, fogotten.
But ex-residents' memories live on in the form of fragments - shards of croekcery once used in their homes - that can still be found in the soil.
The idea
A project that uses found fragments from District Six to remind South Africans of the forced removals, and that supors the District Six Museum's mission: to keep the displaced community's memories alive..
The execution
With the help of District Six Museum archivist, special moments and iconic landmarks were identified. A local illustrator then reimagined these scenes, using brushstroke techniques and a blue palette inspired by traditional oxide, giving a contemporary twist to a classic design.
