The background

In Kenya, 1 in 4 children is stunted, with over half the population living with food insecurity and almost half in poverty. Childhood hunger is a daily reality, compounded by drought and floods that ravage an already fragile food supply. The situation affects millions, with nearly half the population made up of primary school aged children.

The solution

Tap2Eat; a mobile-first digital platform that harnesses cutting-edge financial technology, delivers affordable, nutritious meals to children in primary schools across Kenya. Parents pay for subsidised lunches via mobile money, linked to a smart NFC wristband. In under five seconds, children tap on to eat. The programme is cost-efficient, easy to adopt, and deeply rooted in the local community, employing parents and sourcing ingredients from local farms.

The impact

Tap2Eat has reshaped the school lunch experience, making it sustainable, accessible, and dependable. Supported by Kenya’s President and the Governor of Nairobi, it has become a cornerstone for affordable, quality meals. Today, it serves 380,000 children every day, with meals costing as little as KSH 5. Its success has inspired county governments across Kenya to adopt the programme, making a profound difference for future generations and their communities.

The result

  • 380 000 fed daily

  • 5 KSHS

  • Locally produced

  • Backed by county governments
